Enjoy this competitive local-multiplayer game where one player is in charge of causing a fruit frenzy for the other player to manage.

Don't worry, both players need to do both roles before the winner is determined!

Sweet Tip: Get some fruity catching combos to maximise your point earnings.

This juicy game was made specifically for use with our custom fruity controllers.

Yes, they are made of real fruit!

(Thanks to the use of a Makey-Makey kit)

DESIGN GOAL

NOVELTY

When brainstorming ideas for this design challenge, the first thought we all had was that if the Makey-Makey kit would be compatible with real food we had to make a game that incorporated that.  After some testing we found that the fruits worked fantastically with the makey-makey kit.

For the game, we knew we wanted to make something that was fun to watch as it was to play.  So we decided to make a competitive rhythm game where the player needs to "catch" the fruit before it falls onto the ground with the twist that the other player is setting the rhythm.

CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS

  JUST A FRUIT NINJA CLONE?

Our game was initially a single-player game where the player needs to "punch" as much of the fruit on screen as quickly as possible.  After critique, we realised that many of our mechanics were similar to Fruit Ninja if it was an Alt-Control game.

Our solution was to make it a multiplayer game. Instead of making it competitive by having both players competing for accuracy at the same time, we decided to have one player send out the fruit and essentially set the rhythm for the other player.

This change not only changed up our game enough to not be deemed a clone, but also drastically improved our game to have competition by sabotaging your opponent.

THE FRUIT CONTROLLERS

The fruit controllers were the biggest concern our team had during the development of our game.  We all wanted to make an interesting controller that allowed the players to physically "punch" the fruit.  However, because fruit is especially fragile that provided quite a challenge for us.

We considered having the fruit be hung by mesh bags to allow for players to still physically touch the fruit (which is a constraint for completing the circuit with the Makey-Makey kit).  However, we only had 1 day left to complete the project and did not have the supplies to achieve this.

We settled on having a horizontal grid-like controller which isolated each fruit so that they do not accidentally touch.  The intent was to make the controller look like individual fruit baskets however we sadly did not have enough time to add the aesthetics to the final controller.

Overall this made for a functional controller that was able to be replicated easily (for both players) in a short amount of time.
